Can a woman get pregnant if she has very irregular periods like only about once a year? |
[Edit] |
Answer
It really depends on why the woman is only having one period a year. However, anything is possible, and I suppose if the woman has sex at the time she is ovulating then I would have to say, yes, she can get pregnant.

I am 20 years old, my periods have never been regular apaart from when I was pu on the pill, but last year just after my 20th birthday, I realised that I hadn't had a period for about two months. I took numerous pregnancy tests (five to be exact) on of whih was at the doctor's surgery, and all were negative, I then went for my first smear test two weeks later with no period, I was refered for blood tests two weeks later again and found out I had pcos ( polycystic ovarian syndrome) which basically means that your hormones aren't as effectively released to activate ovulation, I have been trying since I found out to conceive, ( about five months) with no luck yet! but as my doctor has said it's not impossible so keep trying and if you aren't successful go to the doctor's and get tested for pcos and get some fertility aiding drugs. good luck!
Answer
I have never had regular periods. Maybe 1-4 a year. Upon asking doctors about this - they said my female organs looked fine, and could be because I was so involved in athletics as a teenager. I actually conceived on our honeymoon in 1997 (I was a virgin until marriage). Had a little girl in 1998. Then in 2001 it took us almost 6 months to get pregnant with my little boy. So far this year (it is now June 2005) only had one period. It is possible to have normal healthy pregnancies without having a regular cycle. I am 27 now and trying again for number 3, and am not super athletically active anymore.. yet still very much irregular. Its actually nice for the convenience of not going through all the pain and mess every month. But irregularity makes it quite tough to figure out an exact due date for a baby.
