If the code number is D in box 12 the amount is deferred compensation an would not be included in the Box 1 Gross wage, salaries, etc for the year.

You cannot subtract it because it has been left out of your gross wages for the year and is not subject to income tax as long as it is in this deferred compensation plan.

The amount will be subject to income tax when you start taking distributions form the deferred compensation plan.

The code numbers for the W-2 form box 12 may be on the back of one of the copies of the W-2 form that you have in your hand.

Go to the IRS gov web site and use the search box for W-2 go to page 7

What is the difference between adjusted gross income and gross income?

Gross income on the 1040 income tax return is the total amounts of all of your worldwide taxable income added together that is on page 1 line 22 Total Income of the 1040 tax form. From the line 22 total taxable income you can have some amounts from line 23 through line 35 that can be used to reduce the gross taxable amount from the line 22 Total Income. The total amount of the adjustments form page 1 line 36 will be subtracted from the amount on line 22 Total Income and the reaming amount will be your adjusted gross income on line 37 and then that amount (AGI) will go to page 2 of the 1040 tax form line 38 for your AGI amount.

What must you subtract to calculate income before taxes?

Add all of your total worldwide income together on your 1040 income tax return. Then if you have any adjustments to income you subtract that amount from your total income to arrive at your adjusted gross income on your 1040 federal income tax return. From your AGI you would then subtract your standard deduction amount or if you use the schedule A itemized deduction form of the 1040 tax form the itemized deduction amount whichever amount would reduce your taxable income the most. After doing that you have determined your taxable income amount that you will use to determine your federal income tax liability amount on.

What do mean by set-off and carry forward of losses?

set-off. Capital gains and losses will OFFSET each other on the schedule D of the 1040 tax form. That would mean that that the loss would be subtracted from the gain reducing the amount of the gain for the tax year. And if you have any remaining loss after completing the schedule D correctly that amount of loss up to the 3000 maximum amount would be used to OFFSET (set-off) (subtract) from your ordinary income amount on your 1040 income tax return reducing your total income and also will reduce your taxable income and will also reduce your federal income tax liability on your federal income tax return.
