In general earthquakes are caused by geologic forces related to plate tectonics.

However humans can and have produced earthquakes in two ways:

  • underground nuclear weapons tests, although the shock waves from such quakes contain only P waves making them clearly and easily distinguishable from other quakes (which always include some S waves)
  • underground pumping operations to extract water or oil or injecting fluids (e.g. injecting water into depleted oil fields to help extract the remaining oil, hydraulic fracturing) occasionally cause very small but detectable quakes as the rocks respond to changes in underground fluid pressure
