== == A dryer outlet is only safe to use for one purpose: to power a dryer.

Obviously you can attempt to use it for something else, such as an electric range, but it is NOT SAFE to do it!

You could drive on the wrong side of the road but it is NOT SAFE to do it!

You could put your hand into a fire but it is NOT SAFE to do it!

In general the reasons for saying it is not safe to use something other than a dryer on a dryer outlet are all about being sure that the circuit you will use for the other appliance (in this case an electric range) has: * the right size of wires to carry the current the appliance takes and

* the right size of breakers on the main supply panel to protect the appliance - and the wiring to it - from catching fire if there is ever a malfunction. Electric ranges are quite different to dryers: people are likely to be "in close attendance" to them all the time they are on! You have to be sure you wire them up correctly and safely to avoid there being any kind of risk of anyone getting electrocuted.

You also have to be sure that the supply circuit used is of the right kind to protect the house from a house fire. That can happen if there is a malfunction in the range but the circuit breakers on the main supply panel - or the wiring feeding it - are the wrong size. The circuit breakers on the main supply panel - and the wiring feeding the outlet for the range - must all be properly sized and correctly and safely installed. == == For more information please see the Related Questions shown below. <><><>

As always, if you are in doubt about what to do, the best advice anyone should give you is to call a licensed electrician to advise what work is needed.

Before you do any work yourself,

on electrical circuits, equipment or appliances,

always use a test meter to ensure the circuit is, in fact, de-energized.

A gas dryer burns gas to provide the heat needed to dry clothes. As it only needs a relatively small amount of electrical power to drive its motor, and maybe also a timer, the electrical socket outlet which a gas dryer plugs into need not be much different to a normal wall socket outlet. Any electric dryer uses a high-power electric heater, which takes a lot more current than is available from a normal socket outlet, so a special dryer socket outlet is needed to power an electric dryer safely.

Driers typically have 30 A fuses

stoves typically 50A

so they wouldn't use the same plugs

If you do change the plug to the 30a be sure to go with the smaller fuses or circuit breaker.

the drier will be wired with devices that will blow a 30a fuse but could just possibly not blow the 50A

if you put a wet rug in the dryer it may stall the motor it may blow a 30A fuse but not a 50a

lint in dryer vents and filters cause many house fires insurance companies fabricate any excuse possible to not pay back, so do it properly

The electric range needs a 40 amp plug to match with a 40 amp range receptacle. A dryer plug only has a rating of 30 amps and will not match the pin configuration of a range receptacle.

The prongs on the cord are different. Dryer are angled and stove are straight. Don't ask me why. Somebody decided they should be different.

NO, you cannot do this . Even if you 'bodged up' the gas dryer cord to fit in the electric dryer outlet it is very dangerous as the electric dryer takes far more power.

Can you plug your 120v magic bullet blender to a 220 outlet?

No, in North America the plug configuration will not allow that to happen. The blade configuration for 120 volts are in parallel where as the 220 volt configuration are in tandem.

What is the difference between a 4 prong dryer outlet and a 4 prong stove outlet?

The four blade dryer plug brings a separate ground wire from the machine to the electrical grounding system. The three blade dryer plug depended on the neutral wire of the plug to make this connection.

Are stackable washer dryers available to fit a regular wall plug or do they require a special outlet?

Usually a stackable washer and dryer system will need a special outlet. Dryers usually run on a 220 outlet so they will need a special outlet installed where you plan to place your washer and dryer.
