Antibiotics can interact with birth control pills, making the birth control pills less effective which means chances for pregnancy can increase. You should use additional contraception during and after antibiotic therapy (at least one more week). Late period can be a signal of pregnancy OR delay because of your sickness. I'm not aware that antibiotics can delay your period, but they can cause birth control to be less effective. So I'd say take a home test. All antibiotics make all birth control pills less effective. Use a back up method when you are on antibiotics.
I have been taking BC for years, and through my experince I have found that taking antibitotics can cause your period to be late. Usually it is one or two days off. And yes, antibiotics can certaintly decrease the effectivness of BC pills, and that could be another reason your period is late.
Addition: Since I was looking for this info a few days ago, here is my experience. I started an antibiotic for a bladder infection the week I was supposed to get my period on BCP. My period started exactly a week late - just after I finished the prescription. I started a new pack of pills on time anyway - did not seem to have any effect on me getting my period. I think the delay must be related to either the antibiotics or the stress from being sick.
ANSWER Many girls have asked the same question, you can find it on many sites, and the answers were mostly that antibiotics can not affect the period. But many girls ask the sam questin over and over again, makes you wonder... At least it should!! Usually you will find that they say that antibiotics do have an effect on the BCP, but I do think that antibiotics affect the period and entire MC even if you are not on the BCpill. There is no scientific reserch for that, and the doctors will always say it's more likely that the ilnes and stress caused the period problems. But I found a litlle sientific researc about the affect of the antiobitic on the period. And the conclusion would be-the antibiotics(penecilin) we get today in pills or other forms is not pure, that could be the main couse of the problem. Because when they gave pure penecilin to women they did not have any problem, or irregularities. But when they gave them antibiotics we mostly use - more than 90 procent of women had some kind of irregularities in their periods. I my self have the same problem, i took antibiotics two weeks ago, and this month my period is late first time in my life, there is no posibility that I am pregnant.
This post is just for the girls who will look up the net for the same problem as I did. Because we all do have mostly problems with our periods when we take antibiotics- it's obvios, and still i find some people who insist that it is not possible, we all need to educate a lot more from each other, and our experiences.
Sorry for some mistakes, im not from English speeking country
