Yes and no. It depends what the bacteria causing the vaginitis are. Bactrim is a good broad spectrum antibiotic and as such, it very probably will help. Ideally, vaginal swabs should be taken at the first visit, and sent to a lab for analysis. The lab will identify the bacteria under a microscope. They will put the swab in a petrie dish to grow a colony of the bacteria, and then they add various antibiotics to see which one kills them. Obviously, this lab work takes a few days and the doctor won't want to leave the patient untreated until the lab results come back because of the possibility of the infection migrating up the genital tract. So the doctor is likely to prescribe a good broad spectrum antibiotic like Bactrim, and it will probably work. However, if the bacteria isn't susceptible to Bactrim, the woman should return to the same doctor or to one who has her medical notes. By that time, the lab results should be back and they will have written in the report exactly which antibiotics are best for that particular infection.

∙ 16y agoYes, Bactrim will help a urinary tract infection (UTI). It is an antibiotic that is commonly prescribed specifically for UTIs. However, it will only be completely effective if the entire prescription amount of the medication is taken. If you stop taking them when you begin to feel better, the UTI will come back worse, as the bacteria causing the infection will now be immune to the antibiotics.

I am 18 years old and get bladder infections monthly, and i have been on many different antibiotics and am currently on Bactrim now. Although this is my 4th day taking them and i feel back to normal, Bactrim has major side effects and every time i take it i get VERY nauseous. I recommend going to the doctor and having them prescribe you with something else.

∙ 12y agoBactrim is sometimes used for urinary tract infections, but it is not effective against yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis, or trichomonas, which are typical vaginal infections. It is also not effective against typical sexually transmissible infections.
