"All things in moderation", as far as we know, small amount of talc will cause no harm since they have been using it around babies for years. However, there is a theory that baby powder may contribute to the risk of ovarian cancer. At least one study showed some link to the prolonged use of baby powder and ovarian cancer, but there is also a genetic component to ovarian cancer (family history). Baby powder applied to the vaginal area prior to surgery was detected in the abdominal cavity during surgery, apparently through the fallopian tubes. Below is from a pediatrician (what may have been fine to use years ago doesn't mean it's good for us today. When it comes to infants why take the risk. Wash with baby soap for the time being. Later you may switch to a bar soap after 2 months of age. You can use Ivory or Dove soap. Lotion is permissible but not baby oil. Heat rash is nothing more than small red pinhead size bumps on the chest, neck, arms, etc. This is caused by the pores being clogged by sweat, lotion, milk, or chemicals in the clothes i.e., Downy rinse or deodorant Bounce towels etc. To help clear up the heat rash, wash area clean and let it dry. Talcum baby powder can cause lung damage if inhaled; when using powder, do so sparingly and try to keep baby from inhaling any, or simply do not use it. Corn starch powder is safer.
Inhaling baby powder or simply having it on your skin can cause cancer. Frequent inhalation of talc has been linked to lung cancer, especially in those that mine talc. Babies are especially at risk, and several have died as the result of baby powder inhalation. Women that frequently use baby powder to absorb genital moisture are also at an increased risk of developing ovarian cancer. In fact, many doctors treating these women have found talc residue in the tumors themselves.
GENERAL HEALTH EFFECTS- PHYSICIANS NOTE
Massive accidental aspiration may cause impaction blockage of airways. Lesser amounts may lead to bronchoconstriction, bronchitis, pulmonary edema, or fibrosis. Respiratory arrest should be treated with intensive supportive therapy and oxygen. If respiration is compromised, endotracheal intubation, removal of impacted material, and assisted breathing should be considered.
Most cosmetic powders are made with a talc base. Talc is a mineral, one of the softest minerals with an oily feel; which makes it perfect for use in powders. There have been some reports that inhaling talc is not healthy and can cause lung diseases or cancers. To date, there have not been any reliable studies to support this allegation. Some baby powders specifically state that they use cornstarch as their base.
Since there isn't reliable science to guide us, you must use your own discretion. I personally did pick a baby powder made from corn starch but I also use an anti fungal powder, recommended by my podiatrist, for my feet which is talc based. If it concerns you, you can choose a cornstarch based powder or simply avoid surrounding yourself in a cloud of powder to minimize the amount you inhale.
Breathing it in definitely wouldn't be good for you and could cause a cough. However, I know of no link between Asthma and baby powder.
No.
Use cornstarch, powder foundation, baking soda (makes hair a bit dry though ), plain flour (fave^_^). Do not use baby powder. Baby powder is made of Talc that can cause cancer and asthma. If the baby powder is talc free then you should definetly use it.
respiratory problems, asthma and allergies can be caused by inhaling powder lighteners.
