This thesis stated that DEHA was released from plastic water bottles when they are used more than once. DEHA (or diethylhydroxylamine) is a potentially carcinogenic element. However, it has NEVER been classified as a human carcinogen. The FDA has approved DEHA for products used in food storage.

This is all moot as most plastics used in water bottles do not contain DEHA.

So, go ahead and refill those plastic water bottles. Or, better yet, don't use them at all. Take your own bottles and REFILL them instead of wasting money and resources. See the two links below
