Any industry that runs on fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas), adds extra carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, thus contributing to global warming. The petroleum industry does this.

As well, it also provides the fossil fuel (petroleum) for the transport industry, which is responsible for 30% of greenhouse gas emissions.

Petroleum does not directly cause global warming. It is the combustion of petroleum which causes global warming. This is bcause petroleum is mostly made up of hydrocarbons. The combustion is given by the chemical equation: 2 C8H18 + 25 O2 -> 16 CO2 + 18 H2O. It is rather obvious now that carbon dioxide is one of the main greenhouse gases which contributes to global warming. Therefore, petroleum does not directly cause global warming. Industrial activites and motor engines which require combustion of petroleum for energy release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, thus causing global warming. Hence we can establish that petroleum is an indirect cause.

The combustion of hydrocarbon is the chief source of man-made Carbon Dioxide which is a significant greenhouse gas. The increase in CO2 levels tracks well with the increases observed in global temperatures. It is believed to be a significant factor in the enhanced Global Climate Change observed by almost every reputable monitoring system and confirmed by the majority of climate scientists.

Burning fossil fuels can and does cause global warming. When fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas burn, they produce carbon dioxide (CO2), a greenhouse gas. The long-term concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide was in the range of 260-280 parts per million (ppm) until the beginning of the Industrial Age, when it began to rise to its present level of 380 ppm due to human activities such as burning fossil fuels. A recent poll of scientists in different fields has found that 97 per cent of those who published at least half of their peer-reviewed research in the climate field agreed that global temperatures are rising and that human activity was significant in this process.

A:The answer is no, burning fossil fuels does not significantly contribute to global warming. The most abundant and important greenhouse gas is water vapor, and CO2 is only a small percentage of this. Historically, increases in atmospheric CO2 levels have lagged behind temperature increases by a thousand or more years. The science is firm in showing that CO2 is not a significant driver in climate change, thus burning fossil fuels does not lead to global warming. Please see the following paper for the analysis, data and conclusion:

Mudelsee, M., 2001, The phase relations among atmospheric CO2 content, temperature and global ice volume over the past 420 ka. Quaternary Science Reviews, v. 20 p. 583-589

Oil does cause global warming in a way. The use of oil causes air pollution which increases global warming by trapping heat near the earth.

Did the discovery of petroleum contribute to the increase in global warming?

Yes. The burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) in industry, transport and the generation of electricity releases Carbon Dioxide (CO2), a greenhouse gas which is causing global warming.

Yes it does contribute to global warming beacause of the coldness in it

How does Mexico contribute to global warming?

Mexico does contribute to global warming. It does release greenhouse gases.

How can less use of petroleum and electricity contribute in reducing global warming?

Less use of petroleum and electricity can contribute to reducing global warming by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Petroleum is a major source of carbon dioxide emissions, and using alternative forms of energy can help reduce reliance on it. Similarly, electricity generation from fossil fuels also emits greenhouse gases, and transitioning to renewable energy sources can help mitigate global warming.
