Petroleum does not directly cause global warming. It is the combustion of petroleum which causes global warming. This is bcause petroleum is mostly made up of hydrocarbons. The combustion is given by the chemical equation: 2 C8H18 + 25 O2 -> 16 CO2 + 18 H2O.
