Can carrots make you see in the dark?
Answer:
Answer
This story began during the second world war when the British government wanted to explain away their success at shooting down German bombers and hide their use of radar. There is even some limited truth in the story. The protein rhodopsin found in the eye breaks down into retinal and opsin when exposed to light and reforms when back in the dark. Retinal is made up of vitamin A, which is found in carrots, and a severe lack of vitamin A in the diet can therefore result in night blindness. The government was actually trying to encourage people to grow their own vegetables.
