At minimum, codeine is a pain reliever. It is also used for relieving a dry cough. For both of these actions, codeine makes action on your body and your body has a response to the codeine.

Yes. I have personally experienced this. I was prescribed Codeine Cough syrup for a bad cough. I took some before bed, couldn't fall asleep and then started having audio and visual hallucinations! It was hard to shake off i though i saw little figures running around my room and snickering and making noises with their throats. My body was very heavy, almost too heavy for me to get up, and i would drift off into thought and hullicinations and just had to keep reminding myself that i had taken codeine before i went to bed and that it was probably just the codeine. So i went to the couch clicked the TV on and fell asleep. Its harder to produce audio or visual hallucinations when there is already noise or images in the background. So if you experience any paranoia or crazy hallucinations, its just in your brain, there arent evil spirits running around your room, and i suggest you turn on some music, or turn on the tv to drown out your thoughts!
