Yes. Crying causes several different activities at once. The most important that relates to your question is the increase in fluids in the mouth, nose and eyes. The tears come out through tear ducts in the eyes, the overflow goes to the sinuses (out the nose) and down the back of the throat.

Ever notice when a small child cries, their nose runs and if they are crying hard enough they also start to drool. Well as we get older the tubes that link the eyes, nose and mouth become a little larger and able to pick up more of the excess. But the other thing that happens is we learn drooling and letting our nose run, unchecked down our face is not socially acceptable. So we hold back and the excess is backed up in our sinuses and down the back of our throat instead of down our face.

This excess is what causes the sinus pain. Next time you need a good cry take a few minutes to really blow your nose well, this will cut down on the pressure that causes the pain.
