ground coffee can not make you sick but if you drink too much it can cause heart and respiratory problems. I would say drinking more than a half a pot a day can cause health problems. ground coffee is good for Asthma sufferers though. It is bad for people with high blood pressure however and should be limited to 2 cups a day or switched to decaf.

YES!! Have you considered that coffee is a food product? And just like any other food product coffee has a definite shelf life for freshness. If you've ever seen those oils sitting on the outside of the bean that is a bad sign unless roasted within the last few days (not weeks or months). This is a sign of either an over-roasted, poorly roasted, poor quality, or un-fresh bean. Those oils are what hold all the flavor, proteins, and carbohydrates. When these oils are exposed to the elements (heat, air, moister, sunlight) the turn rancid. Just like any other food product, coffee oils will oxidize and become stale. I can nearly guarantee that any beans you are buying off the grocery store shelves, unless from a local roaster or have a roast date on them, are well beyond their reasonable shelf life. Now I don't know what you have been drinking so I can't insult your selections but anytime you are shopping for coffee you should ask for a roast date. I have never been given a straight answer from any of the "Big Companies" because they want to burn it and put an infinite shelf life on their stuff...

I own and run a top rated coffee shop and have this conversation a lot and have found that many of our guest find that it is not the "acidity" but the "rancidity" that is not sitting well in their stomachs.

So where do you go from here? Look for local roasters where you can get your beans freshly roasted. Look for a roast date on the packaging and try to drink your coffee within 2 weeks of that roast date for optimal freshness and flavor. Don't just go straight for the "bold" or "dark roasted" coffee as dark roast was really just invented to burn impurities out of the beans and unless done very well can just destroy your coffee.

You can also shop online with some of the best roasters in the nation who will ship it out to you the day of or the day after they roast.

Here's a good place to start.

Can I drink Max House original roast expire coffee?

Yes I believe so unless it smells rancid, however it can go stale and won't be as robust in flavor but if it has been kept in a cool dark place it won't kill you. Expired coffee, can it be drunk? This is a fairly common question. And I'm not sure why that is exactly, but I'm going to try and give you my best advice on expired coffee and when it can be enjoyed and when it is best to stay away from it. Now before we get into the nuts and bolts of drinking expired coffee, I want to add the caveat that I very seldom drink expired coffee and I advise you to do the same. you'll need to stay away from musty and expired coffee beans as much as possible. However, the short answer to can you drink out of date coffee is yes. It's a little more involved than that, but generally expired coffee beans are ok to drink. However, sometimes it just can't be helped, so in those instances, I hope that this information will be of use to you. I can't honestly tell you what the coffee expiration date is as this isn't a hard science. And the coffee best buy date or the coffee use by date that you find on the bag of coffee beans is the manufacturers estimate of how long coffee will stay at it's peak flavor. So that really doesn't tell you much. Now personally, I have enjoyed expired coffee that was a year and a couple of days past the coffee expiry date on the bag. Now these were vacuum sealed bags and they were dark roasted coffee beans. They tasted fine. Not as good as fresh batch of roasted coffee, but you wouldn't expect them to be would you? Now if you're going to do this, make sure their is no mold or any other obvious signs of funkiness on the expired coffee. Now when it comes to expired ground coffee, I usually won't drink expired ground coffee that is older than 3 or 4 months. But then again, you want to make sure that the coffee looks fine and living in a dry climate certainly lengthens the expiry date as compared to a moist climate. Bottom line is to enjoy as freshly roasted coffee as you can and when ground, enjoy your coffee beans within a week is the best practice. This way you'll never have to worry about it.
