Can humans and dogs get the same virus or hacking cough illness?

There are few viruses that may be transmitted between humans and dogs, usually through a mediator as a mosquito or a flea but most viruses are not traded between dogs and owners. Dogs cannot get a cold and humans cannot get kennel cough for example.
