Yes. Lightning is a source of high voltage, high energy electrical impulse which can start fires, destroy rock, kill people and yes, even melt sand.

Does sand melt? Can you melt sand? Why wont ice melt in the sand? What does lightning do to sand? Can lightning melt your face off? Does lightning really make glass when it hits sand?
