Primary lupus, also called idiopathic lupus or systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), cannot be cured. However, there are some treatments that decrease the severity of symptoms and help slow the progression of disease. Drug therapy in SLE varies based on the severity of symptoms and the response to treatment, but can include anything from nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), immunosuppressive agents (eg, prednisone, tacrolimus, methotrexate), and interestingly, antimalarial agents (eg, hydroxychloroquine).
Another type of lupus, called drug-induced lupus, is associated with specific drug use (eg, isoniazid, procainamide, hydralazine) and can be "cured" by discontinuing the drug.
