Autism is a spectrum, and autistic people vary from those needing a huge amount of assistance, through to people with very mild autism and sometimes only having a few difficulties with social skills (for example, Asperger's Syndrome).

Certainly many people diagnosed with Asperger's are fully capable of living and coping by themselves. But others with severe autism are more likely to need assistance. Living with supporting family members or in share housing are common outcomes.

Regardless of the outcome, people with autism can often live full and useful lives, and can contribute positively to society.

Supporting autistic people with speech therapy, dietary intervention and chelation have all been shown to help recovery, and research is continuing in these areas.

The DAN protocol (Defeat Autism Now, http://www.defeatautismnow.com/) is particularly successful in helping autistic people recover.

Social Functioning of AutisticsThere are so many degrees and names for different levels of autism.

I have learned by experience and study that the possibility is there. But the odds are not good. Even High functioning autism (aspergers, bipolar) still have the need for a companion to help. Even meds don't make them independent.

ANSWER

i imagine my boyf having aspergers would still get on fine without me, he gets on better with me, but hes not incapable of living by himself

its a people problem so infact he gets on better without society and other people and doesn't need people and socialisation the same way we do

its other people who have the problems with him and so that makes it easier for him to be even more happy on his own

(although his own experiences of childhood may have contributed to this and maybe not all a.s people are so accepting of not having a social life due to their own childhood experiences)

sure he may well forget to pay some bills or buy some milk for a while, but once it got routine he'd be as good as ever

and sure the house may not be sparkling clean, but as it is other people who have the problem with that it wouldn't bother him

im not saying his life would be perfect or even great in our societys standards, but hed be easily capable of living by himself and he would be relativley happy with his life, same as he is now - accepting things as they are is a part of having aspergers

I think it's possible, but it depends. It happens to those who have mild autism.

It depends on the person and how visibly autistic they are.

If a person's inability to verbally communicate or interact in society is severe due to their autism, then they might need someone to help care for them. Otherwise, there's nothing about autism that makes living alone particularly dangerous.

They can be part of society if you accept them for what they are. Autism has always been treated by parents and other people as a tragedy. Austic children do learn to become normal because if they've been bullied or judged all their life. Most autistic children will learn to communicate and be independent when they get older. Some children with autism may not speak at all, but they can learn independence and how to communicate in different ways (sign langauge, typing on a computer etc).

In short, yes.

Autism is a spectrum disorder which means that it is found in a range of severities. It can be very mild and the person has few problems or it can be severe and they require more care.

All but the worst cases can learn to take care of themselves.

Yes, autistic adults can live on their own.

Most autistic people do live on their own or with partners and family, although some autistic people may always need support often autistic adults live just the same as neurotypical adults. Although autistic adults may be more likely to face problems like unemployment due to discrimination which may limit their ability to live on their own, they still remain independent.

Yes, many people with autism function within society without needing any support.

Autism is a spectrum disorder so it effects different people in different ways and to different severities, how it effects a person can also change over time as the person ages or as their living situation changes. As such although there are autistic people who will always need 24/7 care, there are many autistic people who need no support at all and can function just as well within society as neurotypical people.

Yes - autistic people can do anything that neurotypical people can do.

I'm autistic and have lived on my own for 7 years, I also moved away from home long before my neurotypical friends, and I'm even immigrating. We tend to prefer living alone.

Yes, many Autistic people are capable of living by themselves.

Autism is a spectrum and as such different people will have different needs or problems that may impact on their ability to live independently - also consider that the majority of Autistic people are denied employment because of discrimination, so it's not always possible to live independently.

I'm Autistic (Autistic Spectrum Disorder) and was very severely effected as a child, but as an adult I've lived independently without any sort of support for many years. I left home at 18 years old, which is actually far younger than when my neurotypical friends left home.

Whether they can or not depends on how severe they are on the autistic spectrum.

What are tips for parents with autistic children?

Listen to autistic people - even those who are mildly effected know more about what it is to be autistic than a neurotypical parent. Also remember that how someone is affected by autism and the severity in which they are affected varies throughout their lives so it may well be the 'passable' autistic adult was once severely effected when they were children. Your child will also be an adult at some point, adults who have already been through this are your greatest allies. Do not listen to Autism Speaks - this organisation does not speak for autistic people and are known to be openly prejudice against autistic people, they use harmful rhetoric about autistic people to increase their profits which in turn causes a lot more ignorance and prejudice towards autism. Autism Speaks are considered a hate group by most autistic people and autism allies.

Not in the slightest. He simply did a great job of acting like an autistic adult -- which is why he is called an "actor."

What is it called when your afraid or being autistic?

There is no specific term for someone who is afraid of being Autistic.A person is Autistic or they are not, it is pointless being an Autistic person who is scared of being themselves or a neurotypical person who is scared of being something they could never possibly be. Fear of Autism in general is just plain ableism, discrimination against Autistic people.

Will a child with autism ever be able to live and work normally?

Yes, a lot of Autistic children grow-up to live and work normally as Autistic adults. There's a lot of focus on Autistic children, many people forget that eventually we grow-up...we don't just vanish after childhood, we're still here and more attention needs to be given to supporting Autistic adults.

Do autistic children live a long life?

It can if it effects the person enough. Someone with Aspergers should experience a normal lifespan (like anyone with autism) however if they have specific interests this can risk themselves to be in dangerous situations. Autism is not like a deformity which can certainly shortne lifespan but rather it is somethign someone lives with mentally for the rest of thier lives.

Should people treat autism as a tragedy?

Many parents do struggle with their autistic child and are concerned about their future. Autism doesn't mean a child/adult who is mentally handicapped. Autistic brains think different and many autistic people only deserved to be understood and not treated like they're sick or handicapped. Autistic children/adults are not sick or handicapped. Many parents should try to understand their autistic child instead of being scared all the time.
