Solar panels will work in snow, but any snow on the panel will reduce the amount of light getting to the array. Naturally that reduces its effectiveness. A thin layer cuts a chunk off the output, and little thicker layer cuts even more off the output.

Ice melt socks secured on top of the panel can keep a small area open during heavy snow events. The sun finishes the job the next day. Most ice melt socks are refillable with non-corrosive ice melt crystals and a full sock can last all winter.

First, you need to make sure the solar panels are installed at a +40 degree angle to shed as much snow as possible. Secondly, you need to keep a small opening in any snow accumulation on the panel at all times during snowy weather, then when the sun comes up the next day it will finish clearing the snow by heating up the panel.

An IMS or (non-corrosive ice melt crystal filled sock), snow rake, or brush can be used to keep a small area open each day.

Solar panels harvest the power of the sun and convert it to energy. On average, there is about 1 kilowatt of power for every square meter of ground surface on a daily basis. The cold weather does not affect the efficiency of the solar panel but the fact that the sunlight is less direct in the winter months does reduce the amount of energy each panel can convert. To increase the efficiency of the panels no matter the time of year, make sure to keep them clear of snow, ice, dirt, leaves, and anything else that can interfere with the ability of the light to get inside the solar panels. The lenses should be as clean as is practical. Think of them as windows: the more cluttered the lenses are, the less energy is able to get through to the photovoltaic cells that are the black parts inside.

I hope this helps. If you have any other questions, feel free to let me know.
