The American flag may never be used as a table cloth. The law on this subject is found at Title 4 of the United States Code, Section 8, "Respect for the Flag". Subsection (e) states: "The flag should never be fastened, displayed, used or stored in such a manner as to permit it to be easily torn, soiled or damaged in any way." The obviousness of the probability of the flag being soiled when used as a tablecloth need not be mentioned; however I will mention it anyway.
