Can the insurance company inspect your home?

[Edit]

Answer

Of course this is "legal"-however you also have the right to refuse the inspection; this would likely result in rejection of the application or a refusal to renew coverage-which is also legal and good business by the insurance company. Insurers take steps to help avoid a loss, including inspections. (a full inspection of your home's electrical and heating systems should be performed annually by a licensed contractor) The typical insurance company inspection is much simpler, usually checking for any obvious problems and determining such important underwriting details as the amp rating of your electrical service, if fuses or circuit breakers, etc. If it discovered a serious problem which you were then able to repair, that would be better than having your house burn down, don't you think?

Answer

You are "requesting" that they add your home to a pool of insured homes. How could any company possibly establish affordable rates if they took every risk presented to them blindly? Rates are established using assumptions. Inspections are done to verify that the assumptions fit the actual conditions.
