Can there be lead or mercury in the fish oil pills that you take for Omega-3s? |
[Edit] |
Answer
If you want to be certain, look for brands which are "molecularly distilled". They should contain no detectable levels of mercury.
Answer
Yes. They can very well contain mercury (or lead), and most likely do. It does not matter if they are in detectable amounts, because they persistently increase in your body for a life-time. Both are accumulative heavy-metal toxins, so even trace amounts become large amounts in the body over time. A much wiser choice would be to use flax seed oil instead. The body converts flax seed oil into omega-3s without the risks associated with fish oils. It is best to get cold pressed oil that is protected in individual capsules from light, heat, and air. Exposure to these things makes the oil rancid and damaging to the body.
