Possibly. But have you checked the chemical levels 1st - chlor, pH, Total alkalinity? Are you running the filter/pump long enough? Run 24/7 until pool is very clear then cut back to about 8 to 10 hrs.

Yes there needs to be a space over the top of the sand in a sand filter. it is best to check with the manufacturer of the filter to find out how much.

Above ground pool filter sand?

You might have too much sand in the filter. I use a diatomaceous earth. When I used too much there was leakage back through the strainer.also I found my pipe cracked inside my filter bowl and sand was seeping into the pool, removed all sand and did some home pluming replacement.very simple job to do...

Is low sand in pool filter bad?

It depends on what you mean by low. You need to check your filter's manual, and see what level it SHOULD be. Lower than that, usually means you are losing sand into the pool (you'll know!) or when you backwash (because the pump is too big for the filter.) If you are losing sand, you need to correct the cause and then add more sand, after you've resolved the problem.

What grade of sand to use for pool filter?

.017 to .022 silca sand found at any pool supply store New: I doubt that you are going to find .017 or .022 sand even at a building supply place that specializes in sand, plaster, rocks, gravel etc. A #20 silica sand is what is available for swimming pool filters and that is what should be used. .017 sand may in fact be too small for the latterals in a sand filter thus letting small amounts of sand to pass thru to the pool daily resulting in a buildup of dust and sand on the floor of your pool.

Can the psi on my pool pump be too low?

The psi on your pool pump indicates how much dirt there is in the filter, the cleaner the filter the lower the psi. normally when the filter is clean you wil have a low psi and as the filter gets dirtier it will rise. However if the psi suddenly becomes much lower then usual it may indicate a fault in the filtration is letting unfiltered water circulate back into the pool as in a torn filter cartridge.

I accidentally vacuumed dirt in my pool using backwash mode instead of waste mode. How do I get the dirt out from under the sand?

There wont be any dirt under the sand. When you vacuum your pool you should do it on filter mode Otherwise you will lose a lot of water for nothing, this would be especially wasteful in the case of a salt water pool. Ofter having vacuumed the pool on filter mode and if the pressure gets too high backwash. after backwash rinse for a minute, then return to filter.

Why is there dirt on The steps and swim outs in my pool?

The way you describe your problem sounds alittle familiar. Im know pool specialist but im trying to become on so ive picked up alittle bit of knowledge lately. As you mentioned you have changed the sand in your filter already which is the first step when you are getting dirt etc... back in your pool whilst the pump is running. Although you have changed the sand you may have put too small of a sand particle in your filter. I dont know much about EZO sand but it is a possibility that the sand had little clay particles attached to it and as the sand has become wet the clay has separated. Which could be causing the clay deposits in your pool. Your best bet is to find out from the person who installed the sand whether they have any problems like this happening. Also ask how fine the sand was, if its too fine a sand for the filter you have. The pump will just circulate it through your filter and pool which is not what you want. Hope this has helped alittle. I have had this problem in the past. When the sand was added to filter it is very important not to get any sand into the top tube. It must be covered. If sand gets in there it will certainly cause this problem. Also any cracks inside of filter will cause same thing. It may be too, not enough sand was added to the filter, too much sand added or you may have a damaged lateral. These only if it is sand at the bottom of pool. Dirt and other small debris is another situation. If the latter, it could be a part of the b/w valve assy internal parts that are either loose or missing. On the other hand if you have a DE filter you may have some damaged grids. They have to be removed and replaced. The "dirt" is actually DE dust and fine particles of dirt that accumulates over the weeks or months.

You had the sand changed and sand comes out when you backwash even took the output cap off and sand poured out until you replugged it?

It sounds as if there is too much sand in the filter , try reducing the sand level a little

When is it time to replace your pool filter?

One way would be that the water never really gets crystal clear. A good rule of thumb is change sand every 5 years. Of course use the correct grade of sand and use the filter manufacturers recommendations for the correct amount. Ken

Too much de in pool filter?

Clean it out and start again. Check and manual for the amount of DE in the filter. Too much is like throwing money literally down the drain. While your cleaning the grids check for tears.

Why wont your sand filter filter your pool?

I put water in the filter box and when I turn on the filter water is not circulating thru the chlorinator as if there is a blockage. I have cleaned both the areas and th skimmer basket and the basket to the filter are both clean. I have tried the waste cycle and the water is not escaping. Its very frustration as I generally use half a bucket to get it going and its now not going. Please help Regards Paul P

Why does a new sand filter not filter?

The sand is too coarse and the silt flows freely through the filter, or the sand is so fine and compacted that even a thin silt layer prevents further water from penetrating

How does a sand filter work?

A sand filter has laterals (plastic tubes with holes in them) in the bottom, covered with a foot or more of sand of a particular size grain. Pool water is flowed onto the top of the sand and vacuum pressure draws the water through the sand. The particles in the water are trapped in the upper level of the sand and the clean water flows through the laterals and back to the pool. As the dirt builds up on the top of the sand (the schmutzdeck) the filter actually cleans better. Once the dirt layer is thick enough to impede the flow of water, you have to remove it by backwashing. You do not want to backwash too often or you will lose the efficacy of the filter. Be sure to shut off the pump before you move the lever to backwash or you WILL crack the laterals - requiring a very expensive repair.
