From personal experience, the answer is no. Abusers don't hit their wives and girlfriends because they are depressed, it's from a much deeper psychological problem that requires a good healthy amount of therapy.
When abusers see their victim gaining control they can do one of two things ... fly into a rage and perhaps harm their victim, or, they can be syrupy nice and do everything to win you back (sending you flowers; taking the blame for the abuse, etc.) Don't get suckered in! Abusers have deep-rooted psychological problems and until they go for help (few ever do) they will always victimize their mate(s). Stay strong and move on Marcy
All hell breaks loose! An abuser wants constant control in order to control the environment around them (they feel safer.) Putting two abusers together is one giant tug-of-war not to mention being dangerous is a bad idea. Both parties should seek psychological help for their abuse problems. Marcy
Abusers can stop using with relatively little discomfort. Addicts find quitting extremely difficult for both physical and psychological reasons. Abusing a drug means you are not taking the way it was prescribed and/or not for the reasons it was prescribed. Most abusers abuse for fun or to experiment. Addicts NEED the drug physically and psychologically. They are dependent on the drug in every aspect of their lives.
Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers was created in 1984.
Not all abusers are narcissists, but all narcissists are abusive. Thats right. Some abusers are BPD. Some are sociopaths. But all abusers have a personality disorder. All are selfish (to a dangerous degree). All lack empathy (when it gets in the way of their selfish desires..and there are innumerous desires, they are never satisfied).
Abuse comes in many ways; it can be both emotional and psychological. As a victim dealing with abuse, the best way is to set boundaries and realize you alone cannot change the abuser. The best way to handle it is to set boundaries, understand that it is your reactions that you can really change, and get professional help if problem escalates. Confronting an abuser as an outsider may or may not be the best idea; they may take as an attack and direct their anger at you. If it is indeed physical abuse, call authorities! There are laws against physical abuse, but not emotional abuse.
