The majority of land tortoises are unable to swim, as they do not have limbs or bodies built for this kind of activity and lack the webbed feet used by the aquatic turtles. If a tortoise falls into deep water, like a pond or river, then they tend to sink like a stone and drown. However, tortoises do enjoy bathing in water, and will wade in very shallow water. As long as the water level is not above the tortoises head, they are safe. If a tortoise is kept as a pet, it is important to provide a shallow dish of water for it to drink from and stand in. It is essential that the dish is the correct shape and position so it will not tip over when the tortoise tries to climb back out again. There are one or two species of tortoise that are able to float, and maybe swim a little way using a "doggy paddle" style, but these are few and far between and not normally kept as pets.

∙ 13y agoNo! Of couse you have your normal simi-aquatic turtle that do swim. Next you have another type of simi-aquatic turtles but these turtles don't have webbed feet so that means that they are unable to swim. Then there are land turtles which do not live in water.
