I have used it to destroy small hornet's nests. It doesn't seem to kill hornets though. It obviously poisons them they become disoriented and often fall to the ground (I usually step on them at that point) but not always. I have never been stung either, and it may have to do with the fact that WD40 contains a combination of hydrocarbons and alcohol. The nests ALWAYS die or are abandoned.

WD40 DOES work on wasps and wasps nests.

Let me tell you of my experience...

A noticed a good few wasps in the house, in unlikely places and a noticeable amount in the garden. I took a look up into the attic and low and behold, there in the corner was a wasps nest the size of a garbage can!
A quick bit of research on the net convinced me that WD40 would do the trick and NOT 'raid' and other 'wasp killers'.
Armed with a broomstick and two big cans of WD40 - one with the tube inserted, the other without, I went to work lying about four feet away from the nest, and proceeded to give the paper mound a good bash with the stick. Immediately the little critters came flying out - straight into a fine spray of WD40.
As soon as the wasps hit the spray (which really covers a large area of the air) they tumbled out of the air and only the floor where they wiggled and wiggled and died. They really don't like having their water displaced!
Then, now the nest had a cracking great tear in the front of it, it was down with the broomstick and out with the WD40 can with the little red tube attached to the nozzle. The spray of the liquid is soaked up by the paper nest like a sponge. The can can be aimed from a good 4/5 feet away and I emptied the entire contents into the yellow and black guys home, all the while giving the air the occasional squirt as the odd wasp took to the air.
In all it took about ten minutes and no stings. I then exited the attic and closed the hatch behind me.
I returned a week later to find the wasps had abandoned ship. A few dead bodies lying around from the previous encounter but other than that, the nest (or remains of it) were wasp-free. I scooped up the big bits - the honeycomb-looking slices are quite tough - into a bin bag and hoovered the rest up with the hose attachment. Job done!

Generally speaking, any insecticide capable of killing bees will kill wasps also, and vice versa.

What chemical is used to destroy a wasp's nest?

I don't know what chemical is in wasp killer if that is what you are asking. I know that diatomaceous earth works well on nests that are in the ground. The wasps cannot get through it without dying. There is a safer wasp killing spray. I think it is Concern brand.

Why do you use alcohol on a wasp sting?

Before you use alcohol on a wasp sting, bee sting, hornet sting or ant bite spray WD40 on the affected area. The pain will be immediately neutralized. Stings with more poison may continue to throb but the pain is gone. The only sting that I've had that was not affected by WD40 was from a hard head catfish.
