Can wearing briefs lower sperm count? |
Answer
Briefs hold the testes closer to the body than operable temperature for sperm development. So while your body is producing the same amount of healthy, viable sperm; Those sperm are dying off due to the heat. If one wears briefs for their lifetime, their living sperm count will be less then that of a man who does not wear briefs. But if that same man took those briefs off, within a 24-36 hours, his healthy living sperm count would be that of a man who never wore briefs. Also, as a man who hasn't worn briefs in a day will have a normal living sperm count. If he dawns briefs, his living sperm count will be decreased within hours so long as he wears them. So unless you're looking to plan activities that result in pregnancy within the next day, briefs are totally harmless to you, and are recommended for testes support for everyday tasks, especially if you work out, and to prevent testicle torsion during your sleep.
Thermal Contraception is an UNRELIABLE method of reducing your chances of accidentally getting a female pregnant by wearing tight-fitting briefs to reduce living sperm count as stated above. This method is not reliable as a sole method to prevent pregnancy as many sperm survive the temperature increase, and it only lasts as long as you are wearing briefs.
Answer
I haven't encountered any scientific/medical study that confirms the connection. Boxers are popular in most western countries. Other men in different parts of the world prefer briefs for the style, shape and support. It's just a piece of clothing, sperm count relies on the health of the man.
Answer
Men who already have a low sperm count probably should not wear briefs if they are looking to become a father. If your sperm count is normal, I woudn't worry.
Testicles hang from the body because they like to be a little cooler to produce sperm. Briefs hold everything close to the body, which can bring the testicles up to regular body temp. But, without briefs the temprature difference is really minor.
If you're thinking this may be a form of contraception - you're very wrong.
Answer
TESTICLES maintain a constant temperature for the semen they store, maintaining a constant temp for the sperm. The testes are like an automatic thermostat. When the temp is too high (lowering sperm count), the testicles drop down to cool off. When the temp is too low (lowering sperm count) the testicles go up into the body to get warm. THEREFORE, when you wear briefs, the testicles stay up, in a warmer position. Briefs don't allow the "automatic thermostat" to work efficiently. THIS is why if you are trying to have children, and have a slight low sperm count, the doctor will tell you to wear boxers to allow the testes to do there job by raising and lowering, depending on temp, to give you the highest sperm count possible. So in answer to your question: YES.
Answer
I have always been told that this depends on your situation. Although briefs are discouraged during day to day activity because they do, in fact, lower your sperm count, during exercise, boxers are worse for you. If you are running, jogging, or basically participating in any sport, your testicles are more supported with briefs, and therefore (although still not good for you) they are better than boxers are.
