I was unemployed for a while so I decided then to try out the benefits I can get from the contributions that have been deducted from my payroll for the last few years. Since I don’t have an employer to take care of my loan for me, I decided to go ahead and make my own research. I browsed around government sites where contributions are mandatory, like the SSS (Social Security Service) and Pag-Ibig. While researching, I saw a lot of questions about applying for an SSS loan if you’re unemployed, so for those who have a lot of questions about the process, here’s what you need to do based on my experience.

1.)

Make sure you have the required number of contributions

.

This is the most important thing. If you’re not eligible for a loan, then there’s no point in applying, is there? You must have the following requirements first:

- 6 posted contributions for the last 12 months

– Payment for the applied month

2.)

Locate you

r city’s SSS Branch

.

Since you’re already an unemployed SSS member, the first thing

you need to do is update your status from Employed to Voluntary. This change has to be filed with your city branch. For an updated list of SSS Offices in the Philippines, click

here.

(NCR offices only for now.)

Now, the next thing you have to do is to procure two documents – RS-5 (Contributions Payment Return) and ISL-101 (Member Loan Application).

3.)

Fill-out the RS-5 Form

.

This form is used to

update your status and update your payments. Fill out the following fields in the form:

– SSS Number

– Surname, Given Name and Middle Name

– Address

– Postal Code

– Tel. No/ Cell. No

– Type of Payor (check the Voluntary box)

You can download the form

here

or get the editable form

here

if you want to have the forms ready before going to the branch.

On the middle right side of the form you’ll see three columns titled Month, Year, and Social Security Contribution. You need to update your payment before applying for the loan so you may need to pay for the current or the last two months. It may be more than that, depending on whether your previous employer has remitted your payments, so its best to check that first.

Take note that the amount you need to put in the Social Security Contribution field is not the amount that you paid for while employed. Check out the payment schemehere. For voluntary members, you can opt to pay the lowest contribution which is P104.00 (One hundred four pesos).

Put in the year and amount beside the month/s you’ll be paying for, add the amounts and put the sum in the Total Remittance field. Sign your name under the Certified Correct field in the lower right part of the document.

Final thing to remember is that the form must be accomplished in triplicate. So make sure that all three copies are completely filled out before proceeding to the next step. You have to do this whether you just downloaded the form or got it from the branch (unfortunately, although the forms look like they’re carbonized, only the topmost part is – for SSS use only)

4.)Pay the amount

.

Go to the teller and pay the amount in your form. You’ll be provided a Special Bank Receipt – this serves as your official receipt. Attach this receipt to your RS-5 form.

5.)Accomplish the ISL-101 Form

.

This is the last formyou need to accomplish. You can get the formhere

or get the online editable formhere

. Just fill out the following fields:

- SSS Number

- Loan Type

- Tin Number

- Address

- Postal Code

- Date Signed

- Signature

Once you’re done, submit this form with your paid RS-5 and Special Bank Receipt. The SSS personnel should then check your eligibility for the loan (make sure that you are).

Prepare your two valid IDs, and your E-6 or digitized SSS ID.The scary part here is that when I filed my application, the SSS personnel did not ask for any valid IDs! Which makes me wonder how they’ll be able to crack down on those who illegally file for other people.

Once everything is in place, you should get an acknowledgment receipt for the application. The check will be sent to the address provided in your form within a week or two.

6.)Follow up

.

If you haven’t received your check in a week, you need to follow up your application. Unfortunately, they only entertain follow ups in person. SMS update information is in their acknowledgment form, but I haven’t tried that yet since you should only follow-up three days after SSS receives your application.

SMS Update request is below:

To register for SSS SMS Update:

Type in

SSS REG><> and send to 2600 (for Sun Subscribers)

OR

SSS REG<>/>/<

SSS#>

and send to 2910 (for Smart and Globe Subscribers)

You’ll receive a text message confirming your registration with your PIN number. You can use this SSS PIN to follow up the status of your contributions, loan balance or loan status.

To follow up for status:

TC – Contribution Status

LS – Loan Status

LB – Loan Balance

Key in

SSS

and send to 2910 or 2600 (depending on your network)
