Absolutely! Importing pets such as dogs, cats, and birds in permitted, however you will need to coordinate with the Local Ecuadorian Consulate prior to arrival to obtain the necessary documentation. For a $50 fee, they will provide you with a 'Animal Health Certificate', but they have some requirements of their own. To begin, contact your local veterinarian to request a letter that will indicate the animal is in good health and free from contagious diseases. You will use this letter to obtain a Health Certificate from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Finally, you will need to have this document "Legalized" or "Apostatized" by your states "Department of State", where you live. Both the local USDA office and your state will be very familiar with these processes. It will be helpful if your veterinarian's letter specifically addresses the canine diseases listed below. If you do not have proof of vaccination, you should have your veterinarian update your animal's shots, just in case. Your veterinarian will probably also suggest additional vaccinations, such as for kennel cough. * Distemper; * Canine Hepatitis; * Leptopspirosis; * Canine Parvovirus and Coronavirosis; * Rabies (for animals older than 3 months), and; * Parainfluenza. Once you have these documents, you should immediately forward them to the nearest Ecuadorian Consulate. Approval is very fast; usually within 48 hours. Once you arrive in Ecuador, your animal will be kept in Quarantine for two or three days. You will need to also pay a fee equal to 25% of the shipment invoice value, which will be around $100 to $150. It's important that you also coordinate with your air carrier cargo office during this time. Airlines have equally strict requirements for shipping live cargo; for example, they will not ship an animal if temperatures are very high or very low. In addition, there are size and construction requirements with regard to the kennel in which your animal will travel (dogs must travel in either baggage or cargo; they cannot be carried on board.) In summary, it is very possible to bring a dog into Ecuador, however your biggest challenge will be timing; all of the above generally needs to be completed within 10 days prior to the date of departure. Note, the above assumes you are importing an animal from the United States; to import Another Country will have identical requirements, but use that countries equivilent government offices.
