Yes you can. I'd apply for it right away. When you call Unemployment ask them what the waiting time is and state you are pregnant. There is a limit as to how long you can collect unemployment ins.

AnswerUsually to collect unemployment benefits, you must be able to work and actively seeking work. If pregnancy has not yet disabled you, you will qualify for unemployment if you are job hunting.

Pregnancy aside, unemployment insurance is usually only available to those who have been fired or laid off. Voluntary quits or job abandonment can qualify on occasion if it is for justifiable reasons (harassment, unsafe or toxic conditions, discrimination, spouse moving (in some cases), pay and conditions different than you were hired for, etc.). You do have to qualify, as others do such as ready, willing, able and continuously seeking full time work (depending on your state's laws).

Unemployment insurance is intended for people who lose their jobs. Many employers will hold jobs open during maternity leave - meaning you probably will be denied. If your employer does not hold your job open, then you would have a legitimate claim.

Short term disability insurance is intended to replace your income during maternity leave, not unemployment insurance.

Update: You can't collect unemployment when you are on medical leave. You can collect unemployment and still be employed with the company you work for as long you meet guidelines of filing for unemployment. If you only work 20 hours a week at 10 dollars an hour, and your benefit weekly amount is 400 dollars you will get 200 dollars in unemployment. This also qualifies for people who are on call and on very limited hours due to business demand.

Most states/employers have a maternity leave clause, but unemployment isn't likely because it is not a job related issue and was not through no fault of the worker.

Religious nonprofits have the option to not pay unemployment. If they choose not to pay then the employee cannot collect unemployment.
