Can you earn an associate's degree in one area and a bachelor's degree in another area?

If your associates degree is a transfer program, then in essence you are working on both at the same time. Still, my advise is to prioritize your career goals and objectives and concentrate on one approach at a time. One of the reasons students do poorly in their studies, is because they start multitasking career paths, therefore either sacrificing one over the other, or sacrificing both.

∙ 18y agoAs far as I know, you can get an Associates in one field and a BA in another. For example, if you attend Community College and get your associates in Paralegal Studies, you could then turn around and go to a major University and get a Bachelors in Communications. You can get as many degree's as you want.

∙ 16y agoOf course you can! You just have to meet all the degree requirements for each degree. If you are attempting to do both concurrently it will typically take you longer than if you just did a bachelors degree.

∙ 13y agoThat just would not make sense for numerous reasons. It would present of host of problems too many to cover here. Focus on one or the other.
You will need to check with your school to make sure they allow it. I think earning both degrees at the same time can be beneficial. Say for example, if you are earning a Bachelors that will require a masters or higher to get a good job and you want to get an associate so you can get a descent job while you earn your masters, that could work. I don't think you should discard the idea. I think you are a great thinker for asking this question and if people can do double majors, they can do a bachelors and an associates at the same time.

Once you have a Bachelor's degree, it is unlikely you would want an associate's in the same subject, since an associate's is the lesser degree-- it is usually what you get before (not after) you get the Bachelor's. But if you are entering a new field and you need training, it would be appropriate for you to pursue an Associate's in that particular field of study, even if you already have a Bachelor's in some other subject area.

Typically an associates of arts (A.A.) and associates of science (A.S.) degree transfers smoothly provided you have taken the program at a regionally accredited college, and stay within the same field of study. I would be somewhat careful of the associate of applied science degrees (A.A.S.) Initially they were designed as a very career oriented program for entry level positions within the work force after the two years and without careful consideration for transfer. However, today many of them do transfer within the same field, but I would sit down with a transfer counselor at the two year institution for appropriate direction. Many community colleges have special articulations with four year colleges and universities today.

∙ 14y agoYes you can. Many individuals with an existing bachelor's degree take an associate degree to either supplement the bachelor's or choose another career path that the associates can offer. Some courses will be able to be transferred from your bachelor's to the associates. How many depends on the program of study at the bachelor's level, and the one you choose at the associates level.

The amount of credits that can be applied from one associates to another second associates would be strictly dependent on what area that second associates is in. For example, a Liberal Arts degree would do better with a second Associates of Arts in International Studies rather than in Engineering. Nonetheless, unless the second associates is in a specific practical field - Allied Health for example - why would you want a second associates degree. You would be much better off using your already accumulated credits toward a Bachelors Degree. I would recommend moving vertically and not horizontally. Viper1
