Yes, you can, though it helps if you're already healthy. In fact, according to Medicine for Mountaineering, most people develop a resistance to it after their first exposure; but because there are many other bacteria and viruses that produce similar reactions as Giardia, it often takes the blame for it.

"If the disease remains untreated, the body may adjust to the parasite, and virtually no symptoms will remain. Studies indicate that as many as 10% of Americans may carry the parasite at all times."

"Giardia" or, more properly giardiasis, is an infestation by a parasite rather than a disease caused by germs or viruses. Giardia lamblia is a flagellated protozoan parasite that colonizes and reproduces in the small intestine, causing giardiasis. Human infection is conventionally treated with metronidazole, tinidazole or nitazoxanide. It can be cured, but given that the conditions that led to infection in the first place (i.e. contaminated food or water or poor hygiene) are usually still present, reinfection is common. The host does not develop an immunity to the parasite.

Giarda (Or Giardiasis) Is contracted by drinking water contaminated with the Giardia Lamblia pathogen. A lot of hikers get this from drinking spring water without first purifying it.
