Answer
We have booked directly with both Carnival and Royal Caribbean, simply by calling them after seeing a price on their website. For example, my wife and I booked a 4-day cruise to Cozumel through Carnival last January, right off of their website, for about $250 apiece (so don't let anyone tell you that you need a travel agent to get cheap cruises)! I do recommend checking the prices on their websites first, so you can have a firm price to give the representative when you call -- that way there can't be any 'fudging' the price on their part. We always call, but I believe you can even book the cruise right from Royal Caribbean and Carnival's websites!
Answer
Most cruise lines won't book direct. But be careful with the travel agent.
And while you're at it, make sure you understand what "Freestyle dining" is about.
Answer
In most cases, the cruise line won't even take calls from individuals - they rely on the millions of travel agents and travel web sites out there to sell their product. I have found simply amazing deals on travel websites such as Orbitz, Priceline and Expedia.com. Also, when picking out your cabin number - make sure you're looking at a deck plan... You want to avoid cabins that are next to crew doors and stairwells, for example.
