A cyst is not a parasite. They certainly don't come from tap water.

Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium parvum are two microscopic protozoan parasites that arise from human or animal fecal sources and that can be found in tap water.

Giardia and Cryptosporidium in healthy people usually clear up on their own, without treatment, within a month. Both parasites can cause more severe symptoms or even death in immunocompromised people, such as transplant patients or those with AIDS or cancer.

Canada and the U.S. tend to have very safe and well monitored water supplies. Many countries in the western world are the same.
