How is polymyositis treated?
High doses of immunosuppressant drugs (prednisone or azathioprine, cyclosporine, methotrexate, I.V. immunoglobulin). Analgesics for pain, exercises improve swallowing and avoid weight gain.

What are the causes of polymyositis?
Unknown but possibly an autoimmune disease in those with genetic susceptibility and may be triggered by an environmental agent (Toxoplasma, Borrella, coxsackievirus).

What is the onset of polymyositis?
A progressive condition, usually beginning in adulthood.

How does polymyositis progress?
Muscle wasting or shortening (contracture) may develop in the arms or legs. Heart abnormalities (electrocardiogram (ECG) changes, arrhythmias), develop in about 30% of patients.
