Oxycontin, much like many medications, is excreted into breastmilk, so the child would be getting a small amount of the drug. This may cause the child to have many different effects from the medication - the most likely, in the case of Oxycontin, is drowsiness and poor feeding. Constipation may also occur.

The most dangerous and feared, is respiratory depression or arrest, resulting in breathing difficulties or death.

My doctor sent me home from the hospital, from giving birth, with oxycodone. She said it was fine to breastfeed while on the drug. To be safe, take only the prescribed amount.

Yes, it is safe to take as directed while breastfeeding. Watch baby for sedation especially if the baby is very young.
