Only under Strict Veterinary Supervision

Our users share their opinions:

  • Never give your animals any prescription medications or otherwise without qualified professional supervision.
  • I would advise caution when giving a dog Tramadol for the first time. My 13-year-old greyhound developed ventricular arrrhythmia (140/min with occasional sinus rhythm), which lasted nearly 24 hours after administration. It was as if the dog, which became disorientated, had been on a very bad "trip." As far as I can discover the literature does not describe this in dogs, but it does mention tachycardia as a potential side-effect of Tramadol in humans. Therefore, administer the drug only under strict veterinary supervision.

Only if your veterinarian has prescribed the Tramadol for your dog and instructed you regarding the proper amount to give and how often it can be given. Tramadol is becoming more commonly prescribed for pain management in animals, particularly after surgery; however, like any medication, it does have side effects and risks associated with administration so it should only be given under direction from a veterinarian.

Drug companies make drugs without discretion on where it will end up. Ortho-McNeil makes the product, and distributes the meds to pharmacies and veterinarians equally.

Word of warning: it is believed that dogs do not absorb the drug the way humans do, and can easily overdose if you give them an extended-release tab.

If your dog is in pain, there are other veterinary medicines that are affordable and work really well for dogs. Please call your vet.

Yes, the medication is the same pill whether you get it from your veterinarian or a human pharmacy. However, this may change and you should always ask your veterinarian about this as formulations and inert ingredients will change.

Yes, provided you have a veterinary prescription for your dog to be dosed with tramadol. Tramadol is a controlled substance, so it can only be given to the patient it is prescribed to at the dose mandated by the prescribing physician or veterinarian.
