Answer:
Men can, rarely, catch a yeast infection from their female sex partner, but proper hygiene after sex would ensure that it doesn't happen. Some women with severe yeast infections may find it painful to have sex while they have the infection. If the woman doesn't have a problem with sex, then yes, you can have sex...just remember the guy's gotta wash his man-parts after you're done. Yeast can be carried by a man for several days which can be passed back to the woman. Giving oral sex to a woman who has a yeast infection will not give you an oral yeast infection most of the time. It'll only do that if your immune system is compromised as is the case with cancer, HIV and organ transplant patients. Receiving oral sex has been shown to increase the risk of women getting yeast infections. So if you've been advised by the doc to hold off oral sex, it's so that she can get rid of the infection quicker, not so that he doesn't catch it.
Comments about pain and discomfort
The following are comments from various contributors about pain caused by yeast infections:
I just got a yeast infection a week ago and just kind of got rid of it about
2 or 3 days ago. and i just had sex for the first time of having it..
and it hurt extramly bad i almost couldn't do it. it was wow just so painful.
In my own experience, having yeast infection infection is very difficult to get rid of usually both of you would be infected and it is extremely painful during intercourse. This how I have overcome this problem. Both of you have a shower before hand. Using canastan cream can help soothe the pain down and can be more exciting during this activity and healing at the same time.
I was having sex, while i had a yeast infection? after the sex my vagina will burn a little. that's when i figure that i had it.
if you have had a sever yeast infection or you are having pain during intercourse during or after a yeast infection you might have a problem. I was having sever pain during sex after my first yeast infection cause it cause a problem called dyspareunia which for me meant that my inner muscles would contract upon penetration cause my body would automatically be scared of the pain. I t took me a while to "retrain" myself and learn that it will not hurt. You might not have this but if you are curious ask your doctor!
I get yeast infection like every time my period end, is not painful to have sex when you have the infection.
Sex while infected?
It is highly recommended that you DON'T have sex while you have a yeast infection. Guys /can/ carry the yeast for, I think it's 3 days, and they can re-infect you. It is better to wait until it's cured completely because as it is painful to have a yeast infection, so it is to have sex during. *I speak from experience* Better to wait.
After the sex my vagina will burn a little. that's when i figure that i had it. I think if you want to have sex while you have a yeast infection, you should just use a condom. that way you wont infect your partner.
Doctors recommend you to not have sexual encounters during the period of having a yeast infection. However , by statistics alone , It is estimated that 70%-80% of Americans carry a yeast infection and many don't even realize it.
Really Its up to you and your significant other as to wether or not you wish to participate in sexual activities during this time. It may take between two weeks and a month to be rid of the yeast infection without continously swapping it back and forth , yet if the two of you wish to prolong the infection then go ahead and enjoy.
Information about yeast
There is confusion as to what a yeast infection is. It is local not systemic. Testing another part of the body (like the above poster with saliva) will only tell you if the yeast is infecting that part of the body. It can occur anywhere on the body that is moist and warm. It is NOT caused by a bacteria. It is caused by yeast (a form of fungus.) It can NOT be treated with anti-biotics. In fact, they can be CAUSED by anti-biotics. Ohter causes will be anything that upsets the natural balance of bacteria in the vagina (douching, pregnancy, excessive exposure to chlorine or soap, weakened immune system, diabetes, MS, etc.) Thrush is a yeast infection of the mouth. You treat a yeast infection with an anti-fungal medication designed for Candida albicans. Athlete's foot medications won't help. For yeast infections that aren't bad, a topical cream will work (like Monistat, men can use it too.) For really bad ones you would take a pill. Sex might be harmful if the infection was really bad, but probably won't be dangerous. It might be painful. There are one-day treatments available so you don't have to go a whole week without. It can be somewhat dangerous for women if left untreated for long enough but is generally easy to cure and has no long lasting effects. If you get them frequently that could be a sign of a more serious problem. You cna avoid them by bathing (at least somewhat) regularly (make sure he does too,) letting your "nethers" get some air (yeast need constant wet and some exposure to the air will retard their growth,) wearing breathable underwear that isn't too tight and leaving the interior of your vagina alone. No chemicals, no soaps (wash the outside, but the inside is self cleaning), especially no scents or douches. Make sure that anything you put in there (fingers, toys, penises etc) is clean and free of weird chemicals. Use lube not lotion. Some people say that eating yogurt with live cultures can help. There isn't a lot of evidence BUT it is good for your digestive tract and it full of protein and calcium. So, trying it can only make you healthier. On a side note, you can grown the yeast in your mouth so do NOT give oral sex to a man or woman with a yeast infection.
