It is now Michigan law that, beginning with the class of 2016, the age for student compulsory attendance is 18. Raising the dropout age to 18 has been complicated and controversial. To be sure, a huge escape clause is included. All it takes is parental consent, and since many of our students who are at risk of dropping out carry considerable sway with their parents at 16, gaining that permission may happen

yes you can at 16 in Michigan you have the right to be a legal drop out and at 16 you can choose whether to go to school or not but that's not a wise decision if you are 16 and still in school why not finish up you have been in school all that time why stop now if you are having problems at the school you are at switch because you only have one or two years until you finish if you to choose to drop out think about getting a GED that's a quicker route and works just like a high school diploma

While I'm not certain why any parent would force their child to lose out on an education, it is likely that if they were to try, in Michigan they would likely be charged with neglect, possibly contributing to the delinquency of a minor if it were reported.

Trust me kid, you don't want to be flipping burgers at McDonalds the rest of your life. Stay in school and get your high school diploma!!!

Real Answer:Actually, so long as you get your GED, a high school diploma isn't exactly necessary for a happy life. I'm dropping out in a couple months and taking GED classes for a while the starting college at 16 and I'll be finishing college when i should be finished with high school and for the career i want, getting my GED compared to my high school diploma doesn't make a difference.

I started failing school around the time i figured out i had ADD and over the years it's been getting worst which makes it extremely hard to focus in your every day classroom.

So sometimes dropping out is for the best.

P.S. McDonalds isn't even hiring people without a high school diploma anymore unless they're in school.

You are allowed to drop out of school in New York at age 16 if your parents consent. Without consent, you need to remain in school until you graduate or until you turn 18, whichever comes first.
