That depends on how much of the tongue is gone. A person can live without the tongue if the tongue is only cut out a bit in the front. However if too much of the tongue is severed, then the person would most likely die.

Tongue not only helps in speech and taste, but also has very important roles in digestion. Without a tongue, you will not be able to swallow. Your food would not churn, and ultimately, they would not be digested.
