NO, to lose weight you have to reduce your energy intake (less food) and increase your energy output (more activity).

Lifting weights and doing abdo exercises (please don't do situps you will damage your back, do crunches) will make you look better as it will tone up flabby muscle but you need to do exercises that get you moving such as swimming, cycling, walking, running, even dancing, to lose the fat.
