Since it was such a small area, we decided to peel it completely off and tackle it first with sandpaper to rough the surface up. It worked OK and the paint is still holding, but our space was only about 4 x 6'.
I wouldn't recommend doing cabinets, because they are handled so often. You would have to be certain to rough every inch of the cabinets. However, if you are just going to throw them away anyway, you have nothing to lose by trying.
Another idea to cover up your old formica cabinets would be to build a new front for them, and screw them right on top of the formica. The cabinet base could be sanded and then painted. First, though, check to see if the formica will hold the paint before spending too much time or money.
Wood veneer can be painted over on kitchen cabinets. The paint should be a latex that is not of acrylic nature. Oil paint will only smear and not dry evenly.
the cabinets were not properly prepared prior to the first painting. The paint can be "stripped" off using a commercial paint stripper or your best bet is to sand the paint and cabinets down as this will need to be accomplished anyway for any furute paint to adhere properly
To paint over veneered cabinets in a kitchen, Sherwin-Williams puts out a paint just for cabinets that dries very hard. Ben Moore has a line also but the color choices were limited. The S-W paint also self primes so unless you have extremely dark cabinets and you want them to be very light, 2 coats should be fine.
Yes. With either an oil based paint over a high adhesion primer, like XIM, a single part epoxy or a multi-part epoxy.
Yes. Clean well first. Use primer specifically for wood veneer or plastic laminate. Then apply paint.
As long as you use a good primer first, you can use it over anything.
Melamine paint
Use gripper as a primer before painting your cabinets. I made the mistake of putting paint over cabinets with out gripper and the paint easily chipped and would even scratch with as little as a fingernail when opening a door or drawer. The next time I painted cabinets I used gripper and after 5 years the cabinets still look like new.
drywall putty!! fill in the holes with drywall putty, let it dry, then sand it and paint over it... it will look as good as new!!
I don't have the answer to your question, but am curious how the cabinets are holding up, were you happy with the finish, what finish of Aura did you use? I've painted some walls with Aura and was blown away by its performance. I want to do my kitchen cabinets, but always thought I'd have to use an oil based product. Thanks!
no
Your best option on refinishing your kitchen cabinets is probably hiring a payed professional. This person is going to know everything on how to refinish your kitchen cabinets and will most likely (if you get good person hired) turn out good.
