Can you use quarter inch plywood as your backer for a vertical tongue and groove install which is in your master bathroom?

It wouldn't be recommended. It would be better to cut away the plaster or drywall in the area of the tongue and groove install and put in horizontal framing members to which the tongue and groove can be nailed.

How to put a floor in your roof?

Essentially, you fit floor boards to the ceiling joists. The more common option is to use 4' by 2' chipboard tongue and groove floorboards, using screws and wood glue on the joints. This will stop creaking.

Can you put tongue and groove on to concrete floor?

It's always best to follow the manufacturer's recommendations but in general, solid tongue and groove hardwood flooring should not be installed on concrete. Many of the laminated tongue and groove pre-finished products can be glued down to a concrete slab. Actually (I am simply improving this question I didnt want to delete the first response) I manufacture hardwood floors, If you are installing floors in a basement the question should be if the floor is solid or engineered. Typically solid wood flooring should not be installed in a basement because the sub-terrain environment is more susceptible to humidity. The moisture then causes the floors to warp. Engineered wood, however is recommended for basements and they often come as tongue and groove. See : Related Links

What type of wood would you use to build a false floor or platform to put furniture on?

In order to have a false floor the first step is to create the space necessary for the false floor. Remove the existing foundation and escalate the desired depth or crawl space desired. Create a load bearing foundation to rebuild a foundation to replace the original flooring after that.

Can carpet be put down on an uneven floor?

FLOOR PREP CARPET You can put carpet over an uneven floor, BUT Every ridge, Gap or mis alignment in the sub floor will show through over time. Here is a good rule of thumb.. If a gap or a height difference greater than the thickness of a Nickel is present, it will show through the carpet sooner or later. Carpet cushion will help, but it is not "floor prep" on a roll & will not fix anything, only mask it some. Ardex floor feather finish is a great & easy product to skim coat & feather out and fill in differences, it is available at any carpet installation supply house or the home centers.. DO NOT use dependable white crack filler, it will crack & break apart and cause you more problems in the long run.

How do you make a hardwood floor?

to make a piece of oak flooring tat is 21/4"wide x3/4"thick which is standard flooring you must start with a straight piece of oak that is 21/2" wide and using a router bit that puts a tongue on the board 1/4" deep along the whole length of 1 side of the board. When that is complete do the same thing ontheright end of the board if the tongue you put on already is facing up looking at the board. Then using a 1/4" groove bit do the remaing sides of the board. So north=tongue south=groove east =tongue west=groove. There is a shallow channel ussually put on the bottom of the board for splinter blow out where the would bursts out of the bottom from the staple or nail when it sets

How do I install new carpeting?

First, I would recommend measuring the room to get the right size of carpet. Second, make sure that the floor is clean. Put down the padding first and tack it down, then the carpet, you will want to have a carpet stretcher handy. Make sure that the carpet is tight and them trim aound the edges.

How high off the floor should a baseboard be for carpet?

Some builders put the base all the way down in all areas. Works fine.

What kind of carpet padding for basements?

You don't put padding directly on a concrete floor. You have to frame out the floor, lay plywood sheets over the frame, probably want a vapor barrier as well. Then you can lay any pad and carpet you want. There are certain types of carpet that come with an attached foam padding that are designed to lay over concrete. If you think you want to just glue carpet directly to the concrete floor, check the mfg. warranty first. Most mfgs. will not honor their warranty unless they specifically state that it can be glued to concrete.
