Among the requirements for eligibility, you must be ready, willing, and ABLE to start work that you are seeking full time and if you are on Disability benefits, it's implied you are unable to work.

Neither SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance income) nor Unemployment benefits are considered "wages". SSDI allows trial work periods where a certain amount of wages is allowed from actual jobs without affecting the disability benefit amount. But even that still doesn't apply to Unemployment benefits, because they are not wages, either. Since unemployment pays as long as you have not earned over your benefit amount for the reporting period, and since SSDI is not "earnings", then both benefits can be received at the same time without one affecting the other.

Unemployment still pays as long as you are able and available to work. People with disabilities can be able to work according to the definition for unemployment benefits. It may take longer to find such a job, but the unemployment rule that you have to be able to work and looking for work to receive benefits will usually not be affected by your disability status and payments, as long as there is some type of job that you can do and you are actively looking for it.

Obviously, a disabled person in a coma is not able to work, but many people with disabilities can do some form of work that accommodates their particular disability.

See the related question below for more information and links to the SSDI and government sites for definitions, etc.

Additional information from Social Security Administration:

Social Security Disability Insurance pays benefits to you and certain members of your family if you are "insured," meaning that you worked long enough and paid Social Security taxes.

Supplemental Security Income pays benefits based on financial need.

Are unemployment benefits affected by Social Security Disability benefits?

Because the SSA is very stringent about allowing Social Security Disability benefits, you are most likely to not qualify for unemployment benefits because you have to be able to work, which the SSA had to admit you couldn't.

Can you receive unemployment benefits and Social Security benefits at the same time in Missouri?

Yes, in Missouri, you can receive both unemployment benefits and Social Security benefits at the same time. However, there are some important things to keep in mind: Unemployment benefits are intended for those who are actively seeking work and able to work, while Social Security benefits are for those who are retired or disabled. You must meet the eligibility requirements for both programs. You will need to report your Social Security benefits when applying for unemployment benefits, as the amount you receive may affect your eligibility or benefit amount. If you are receiving Social Security disability benefits, you may be eligible for an Unemployment Extension of benefits once your disability benefits are exhausted, but only if you are able to work. It's important to understand the specific rules and requirements for each program and how they impact each other. You can contact the Missouri Division of Employment Security or the Social Security Administration for more information and guidance on receiving both types of benefits.

Can you collect unemployment benefits while you are on Social Security for widows?

You can generally still collect unemployment while collecting social security, unless it is social security disability...even then you still might be able to. I worked for the Unemployment Office & just an FYI, they do not know if you are on social security and are unable to check, so if you do not say anything, they will never know.

How does Social Security payments effect the unemployment amounts?

They don't affect each other. Florida repealed its statutes allowing unemployment compensation to be offset (reduced) by Social Security benefits. If you qualify for both unemployment and Social Security, you will receive your full check under each program.

Can you collect New York State unemployment while on disability?

Legally, yes, but it may be a factor in whether you're approved for Social Security Disability (SSDI).While the Social Security Administration doesn't prohibit people on (SSDI) disability from receiving unemployment checks, state unemployment regulations usually require all unemployment recipients to be willing and able to accept full-time work. This creates a conflict, because you're generally not eligible for Social Security disability benefits if you're capable of full-time work. For more information, see Related Questions, below.
