Can you see static electricity?

In: Science

Answer

It is very difficult to see any kind of electricity.

But you can see the spark as a result of static electricity. This spark is best seen in a dark room during dry weather. Certain types of shoes in combination with certain types of carpet can cause a build-up of charge in your body. Just before you touch a grounded object, such as a metal water faucet or screw on a light switch, you will see a blue spark between the tip of your finger and the metal.

Answer

You can also see "sheets" or planes of static electricity. If you rub two dry bedsheets against each other and let the built up static discharge, it can light up large portions of the sheets. Really cool in a dark room.

yes, you can see static when it makes little sparks

No, by definition, you cannot see static electricity. Charges must be in motion (dynamic electricity) for them to make radiation.
