I was on suboxone for a year before I got pregnant with my son. My doctor told me that withdrawling off of the drug while pregnant could potentially kill the fetus due to the stress it would be under while detoxing. He also said it was unknown what would happen when he was born anad that I had a 50/50 shot of either him being ok, or having symptoms of withdrawl. So the question I had to ask myself is whether I would perfer to lose my chold due to the stress of coming of, or potentially havinga sick child for a couple of days. The choice was obvious to myself, and I sstayed on the medication. My son ended up staying in the NICU for 14 days. I was monitored like a hawk throught the whole pregnancy by my doctors and he was a healthy weight and a heathy baby although of the minor struggle he had at birth. I felt as though it was all my fault, but he is perfectly normal, healthy, and in the end he turned out to be perfect. I think although it was hard that I made the right decision and as long as you are under constant supervision everything will end up okay. The withdrawl was not nearly as bad as say other newborns withdrawling on the hard core drugs, you just have to let all doctors be completely aware of what is going on at all times. I hope this helps and that anyone that has to make this very difficult decision. For me the choice was easy. I have a beautiful healthy child that I might not have if I had chosen to come off it while pregnant. Good luck mommies.

No. Suboxone may cause birth defects.

If a woman taking Suboxone becomes pregnant, tell your doctor right away. It is important to discuss the benefits and risks of the medication to decide when, how, and if you should stop taking Suboxone. You should discuss this with both the doctor prescribing Suboxone and with your obstetrician/gynecologist.

From the research I have done on this subject, a flat out "NO" is not a correct answer. Especially considering that there are not conclusive studies supporting it.. In my humble opinion, I would advise a woman that becomes pregnant to discuss this with her OB/GYN BEFORE DISCONTINUING Suboxone. Primarily due to "conclusive studies" that indicate withdrawals from Opiates or Opiates w/ partial antagonist -DO INCREASE THE RISK OF MISCARRIAGE. In any case this is an incredibly personal decision and not one that should be taken lightly nor w/o the advice of your OB. In addition, studies suggest that it is the Naloxen (sp?) that can POSSIBLY cause risk to your baby- not the bupenephrine; therefore, expectant mothers might consider asking their physician about Subutex.

There is no question that the "ideal" situation is that pregnant women be able to avoid medications in general, however this is an unrealistic expectation. ESPECIALLY for women that suffer from the disease of addiction that are actively taking steps towards their recovery. You should be proud of yourself and give pause to the information acquired solely via the internet and discuss all options before making any decisions.

No as suboxone contains naltrexone, a full opiate antagonist which will immediately precipate full withdrawl symptoms. The principle reason for including naltrexone in suboxone is to limit diversion of the drug onto the street. If you are opiate dependent and on heroin or any other opiate for that matter and inject you will be in misery upon intravenous suboxone. The naltrexone component of suboxone has no effect when the drug is taken as indicated, sublingually, and no appreciable amount is absorbed. The buprenorphine is the active ingeredient in suboxone and is a partial agonist. Therefore you cannot take suboxone unless you are in full withdrawl i.e. 48 hours after last methadone dose and well over 24-36 hours for heroind, morphine, Oxycontin, etc. If you take suboxone while opiates are in your system you will experience immediate withdrawl symptoms.

if you have even a trace amount of an opiate inu like vicoden, perks, eroin, methadone etc. and u inject a suboxone it will send u into the worse withdrawal you've ever felt. However if u are clean of all opiates and have been taking your suboxen under your toungue like u were prescribed than you can start injecting suboxone with no problem. Im not at all bragging about this but I am prescribed to take 3 8mg suboxone's every day and i just simply cant afford it so i found out that if i inject just 1/4 of a pill it last me all day long i don't get high or catch a buzz from it at all . Am I proud that I have to do this HELL NO but theres no way I can afford to pay for these. 3 pills a day at $8.87 per pill I don't have insurance and I have 3 kids and a wife. I repeat im not proud of this but i need the medication and his is the only way i can receive my medicine and take care of my family. Im sorry

At present, Buprenorphine(which is in suboxone) is listed as a category C drug for use during pregnancy. This, in the case of Suboxone, means that although scientists think it's probably OK – enough study has not yet been done proving that this is so (the manufacturer does not recommend that it be used during pregnancy). Methadone has been very well studied for a long period of time, and it is known to be safe for both the mother and unborn child. Preliminary studies of buprenorphine indicate that it is also safe, but there is not yet sufficient clinical evidence to allow for a recommendation of use. Several studies that have compared methadone and buprenorphine use during pregnancy indicate that the NAS(withdrawal) symptoms are worse and felt for longer with methadone. The most important thing here is the advice of your suboxone doctor as well as your obgyn! They both need to communicate with each other as well as know every single detail about you and what you take. For example if you are taking xanax as well, do not hide this from them, go ahead and just tell the truth about everything. Although I have know many women who have had healthy children on suboxone, subutex, and methadone your doctors will know what is best for your particular situation, because after all everyone is different. And there has not been much research done on suboxone and subutex. My daughter was born on suboxone and suffered mild withdrawal symptoms and it was awful watching her in pain. It is a terrible situation where the child is a helpless victim , but above all else listen to your doctor and communicate everything to him.....the life of your unborn child depends on your honest with your doctor and willingness to follow is instructions!

It is better to postpone the pregnancy when you are on naloxone and buprenorphine. Buprenorphine is probably safe but the you do not know the effect of naloxone on the unborn baby.
