One of the things that we as muslims do is to follow only what the Qur'an and the Prophet have told us to do. If there is an act which Islam has not told us to do then we call it 'bid'aa' and we avoid doing it. we know that if it had been good to do, then Islam would have otld us about it.
Respecting your mother is mandatory, but there are other ways of doing that which are in the Qur'an and Sunnah.
