I would guess you can, a good way to check (Insert Legal Disclaimer Here) is to soak some cotton wool or a ball of toilet paper in the fuel you want to check and either spark it or see how easy it is to set it on fire. The alcohol you use, ideally needs to be above 40 percent volume (Pure Alcohol, Vodka, Schnapps, Gin, Whiskey, Rum etc.)

Yes, but it smokes and doesn't light as easily. Yes. Don't use very much (About a teaspoon full) any more than this and you might run into some trouble. You'll get a very hot flame, and quite a bit of black smoke which makes anything it touches sooty and black, not recommended for smokers (contaminates your smoke a bit) but ok for campers and BBQ people (Australians).

Yes, 90% isopropyl alcohol will work in a Zippo. Though you will have some small problems. The zippo will not light in super low temperatures, the light will not light as easily, and the fuel will burn up much much faster than any other type of fuel. You may also have a problem with the wick getting burned time to time, but that's unlikely from what I understand. So yes, buy a new zippo or use your old one and take a shot at it, just make sure its 90% and not that 70% or 75% crap.

Also, the upsides to this are abundant, you will not smell a thing from the burning fuel, and that also means that your cigars, or any tobacco product will not have that odd taste when you light it up (due to impure fuel sources, which of course is most petroleum), plus you will be able to tell all of your friends that the reason yours doesn't smell is because your that cool.

1. I tried it and it didn't work.

A: did you make sure it was 90% or better and make sure that it isn't

old (alcohol will evaporate if not contained properly, which is most

likely the problem). Go to a local store and buy a brand new bottle, and

try that out. Also make sure that you prep the wick by pouring some

on it, but don't worry about letting it set since that's an old wives tale.

2. Do not use it it smells like your burning rubbing alcohol and it makes

your cigar/cigarette taste like crap! i hate it I tried it and it totally ruin

my strawberry phillie!!!!!!!!

A: It does do that, sadly. But its much healthier than the dirtier

petroleum products in the original fluid, and almost any other type of

fluid besides methanol, but most people cant get their hands on this

stuff. (If you have a private practitioner bring your zippo to your next

session and ask them to fill it, if their nice and trust you they will).

And in all honesty, do you like the lighter fluid taste better?

Yes you can but be careful so you don't burn yourself. The chimney (the thing on top with holes) gets hot. Be sure to clean the wick and flint. To apply the gas or lighter fluid pull up on the chimney (but don't crush it!). The fuel container should come out. Then CAREFULLY pour the gas or lighter fluid into the packing. Make sure it doesn't over flow. Then put the fuel container back it the casing and clean off the lighter until its dry. (WASH YOUR HANDS BEFOR YOU USE IT)

Yes you can, but it makes the lighter a bit harder to light. I use white gas for cleaning parts in my factory but I still use lighter fluid in my lighters. White gas is also called VMP,and naphtha.

You can, but its not advised. Gasoline is more volatile (and therefore more dangerous) than lighter fluid, though how much more dangerous is debateable. Just proceede with caution.

Absolutely not. Try to use only Zippo lighter fluid in a zippo lighter. Ronson lighter fluid will work too if that's all you have.

Paraffin oil, which is used as lamp oil, absolutely, yes. A zippo is essentially an oil lamp.

No, but only the 90% or higher ones will work. It will leave some leftover water though after the zippo burns all the alcohol because it wont burn long enough to evaporate the water

Could you use alcohol as a substitute to zippo lighter fluid?

No, vodka (at 40% alcohol) has too much water in it. Everclear (75%) may work and everclear @ 95% will work the best. It still won't light as easily as zippo fluid but it'll work; if not, let your zippo dry out and you'll be all set to try something else.
