Pregnancy And Breast-Feeding All forms of eucalyptus oil should be avoided by pregnant or breast-feeding women because of its known toxicity. It is not clear if eucalyptus oil is passed to babies through breast milk, but there have been cases of infant deaths from taking eucalyptus oil by mouth.

No, tea tree oil should not be used during pregnancy or during breastfeeding either. The effect of tea tree oil on an unborn child or breastfed baby is unknown and accordingly using the oil in any way may present a risk to the infant's welfare.

Some essential oils are safe to use while you're pregnant, but you should never assume so. Talk to your doctor before using any essential oil. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should not use eucalyptus.

At 38 weeks pregnant I bathed at night using a whole small bottle of lavender oil (I was told it can bring on labour and I was uncomfortable and over being pregnant). In my first pregnancy I went into labour 2 days later, in the second pregnancy, I went into labour the next day and with the third pregnancy that night. I don't know if this was coincedence or not.

As a precaution, all medications, supplements, and herbs (including essential oils) should be approved by your physician or midwife throughout your pregnancy and into breast feeding.

That being said, tea tree oil is generally safe during pregnancy, especially when diluted in bathwater. It is a great anti-microbial that kills bacteria, fungi, and viruses. It also acts as an antiseptic and disinfectant. A standard dilution is 10-15 drops of tea tree oil per bath.

Essential oils to avoid in pregnancy include (but are not limited to):

* Angelica * Anise

* Basil * Birch

* Cedar

* Cinnamon

* Citrus oils (including: bergamot, lemon, lime, mandarin)

* Clove bud

* Cypress (and other conifers like spruce and pine) * Eucalyptus

* Fennel

* Hyssop

* Jasmine

* Juniper

* Lemongrass (and its relative, citronella)

* Melissa

* Myrrh * Oregano

* Parsley

* Pennyroyal

* Peppermint (and other mints like spearmint and wintergreen)

* Rosemary

* Sage

* Thyme

* Yarrow
