Yes you can. According to Chapter 5 artical 5301-5319 of the Navy Uniform Regulation any military decoration earned while serving in the army may be worn behind it's Navy equivilent (i.e. the navy equivilent has precidence over other branches). The only acception to this is the Army Service Ribbon which cannot be worn on a Navy uniform. For further questions see before mentioned regulation or contact Awards and Special Projects Office (OPNAV 09B33), Navy Yard, Building 36, First Floor, Washington DC 20350.

No, there is no medal associated with it.

Is the gold frame for the Army Meritorious Unit Commendation ribbon removed when worn on the left side of a Navy uniform because with the frame it won't fit on the rack?

If one removes (or alters) any military medal or award, it ceases to be the award. It is not lawful or correct. It would be just like having a medal display in incorrect order of precedence.

Is a Navy Expeditionary Medal recipient authorized the wear of a combat patch on an Army uniform?

No, because Naval units do not typically wear shoulder sleeve insignia (patches). There are exceptions to this rule, however. Does your meritorious unit commendation transfer to the army from the navy?

Navy Meritorious Unit Commendations do follow you to other branches. They are considered permanent awards from all branches, except the Army. Unit Commendations from the Army may not follow you to other branches, or even other units. As long as you were serving in the unit when the commendation was earned, it is a permanent award that you can wear on your uniform regardless of service. Otherwise, the wear of any unit award is only worn when you are actually assigned to that unit (temporary award).

What does ribbon mean?

In the US Military, a "ribbon" is worn on the informal dress uniform, representing the medal. It is of the same color as the medal. There are also ribbons authorized for which no medal is used. In a dress uniform they are typically worn on the right side, while the medals are worn over the heart. You would never wear the medal and the ribbon representing the medal at the same time. Examples would be various unit citations or skill awards. The Navy issues marksmanship ribbons rather than badges. Sea Service Deployment ribbons are awarded for spending long periods of time deployed on ships or with Marine units.
