I think the question is: can YOUR 16 year old stay home by herself for weeks at a time while you work.

It is a very individual question that depends on maturity, intelligence and gender. OK the first question is what's the gender? You answered that, can she protect herself from rape? A robber who got wind of your absence and just figures he will check to see if she is sleeping......

Girls seem better about not partying, or maybe we just clean up better- is your kid going to use the time to party and invite friends over? Ofcourse she will SAY they won't but "weeks" is a long time.

Man if my mom had ever left me alone in the house for weeks at a time I would have felt so good, so much more mature than my peers but would I have been able to cope with a house fire, and what if the house burnt down? What if it got robbed, where would I have gone then and how do you think the police will react when she calls the fire department? I hate to be so negative because I'm sure I would have loved to have the house to myself at 16 but as my mother would have told me at the time, it's just not safe.

You should find an adult for the kid to stay with, if for no other reason then for legal reasons. Maybe even an 18 year old. 16 is not considered an adult in my state and "WEEKS" is a long time - alot can go wrong. A lot of trouble can find her.

Even more, word might get out, kid brags to a friend whose parent knows a police officer and I've never been through it but I'm thinkin:

Abandonment

Neglect .....

Unsafe parenting

Surely there are more. FIRE THREATS, ROBBERY, HOME INVASION, RAPE..... 18 yrs old spending weeks alone at home could be an excellent way to learn to handle life on her own. How far away will you be?

How long will it take you to get there if she calls you in a panic.

How do you think the police will react? Weeks is just too long.
